I need an Underworld Movies expert!?

[1st Underworld] When Michael goes back to the mansion a second time and gets in the car with Selene and she tells her its unusual that you survived a bite from a lycan..blah blah blah..then she says that when bitten most lycans die because its presumed deadly..why dnt the other lycans die??? please explain this to me!
