Are LCD HD TV's as good as LCD computer monitors? Looking for a 32"?

I have a 24" dell monitor i bought like 3 years ago, i'm looking to buy another screen. I noticed that the 32" HD LCD TVs are really cheap. They say you can connect to a computer, but in reality, how do they compare to a normal computer monitor, are their drawbacks? Can i sit close to these TVs like a computer monitor? Anyone have any experience? or recommendations on what lcd tv is best for this, looking at a resolution of at least 1900 x 1000, which i think is 1080p.
