I had been studying with the JW's for a few months when.....?

...one day at my home an elder who had came along for the study told me that if I didn't join the organization that I had no hope for a resurrection. Correct me if I'm wrong but the last time I checked Jehovah had appointed Jesus as judge not some elder in my local congregation. Many times in my studies the subject of eternal torment in hell has come up and how the churches use that as a fear tactic. If someone tells me that I have no hope for a resurrection unless I join the organization, to me that seems like a scare tactic also. So my question is do you believe that this respected elder (whom I have trouble respecting now) is qualified to make such a judgement?
